Project overview
The product:
Pepper is a subscription service for pet food meal plans that aims to provide customized, high-quality pet food to pet owners who struggle to find trustworthy options for their beloved animals.
This project is part of my Google UX Design Course and serves as a conceptual design.
Project duration:
March - April 2022, 6-week project
The problem:
Pet owners who want to provide high-quality pet food tailored to their pets' needs often lack the necessary information and methods to do so.
The goal:
Create a one-stop service for a customized, high-quality pet food subscription.
My role:
UX designer responsible for designing an app for Pepper, from conception to delivery.
Responsibilities:
Conducting interviews, creating paper and digital wireframes, developing low and high-fidelity prototypes, conducting usability studies, ensuring accessibility, and iterating on designs.
User research: summary
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the struggles and needs of pet owners when it comes to selecting and purchasing pet food for their pets.
Through research, I defined the primary user group as pet owners who aspire to provide more for their pets but lack the knowledge or time to do so.
Another key feature of Pepper, determined during the research stage, is the inclusion of a community where pet owners can learn from and connect with fellow pet owners, sharing knowledge and experiences related to choosing pet food.
User research: pain points

User journey map
I completed the user journey map for the persona James, which I created. Additionally, I identified key elements and features that should be emphasized in the app to address the shortcomings of the current pet food purchase process.

Paper wireframes
After evaluating the user journey and identifying the parts where users experience frequent frustrations, the main features of Pepper have been defined as follows:
• Subscription pet food
• Shop
• Community

Digital wireframes

The main user flow of Pepper

The most crucial aspect of the application is the ability to customize meal plans based on individual needs. As a result, users undergo a straightforward meal quiz to receive personalized meal plan recommendations.

Low-fidelity prototype
I developed a low-fidelity prototype based on the digital wireframe, dividing the user flow into three directions: "My Pantry," "Shop," and "Community."
The first round of usability study was conducted using this low-fidelity prototype.

Usability study: findings
I conducted two rounds of usability studies. The findings from the first study served as a guide for refining the designs from wireframes to mockups. In the second study, a high-fidelity prototype was used to identify areas of the mockups that required further refinement.

Mockups- insights & usability study revision
Insight 1:
I updated the icon for adding an additional pet to the pantry, replacing the simple '+' sign with a more relatable paw symbol combined with a plus sign.
Insight 2:
Incorporated into the My Pantry page are two new elements: a calendar for checking the delivery date and a Summary of Diet section.

Insight 3:
To achieve more accurate customization, a more detailed meal quiz has been implemented.

High-fidelity prototype
The final high-fidelity prototype demonstrates the interactive user flow of completing the meal quiz.

Takeaways
Impact:
Pepper aims to address the needs of pet owners who are eager to provide better care for their pets but lack the necessary support. It is designed to help them manage their pets' meals in a systematic and tailored manner, taking into account each individual pet's unique conditions.
What I learned:
During my first UI/UX project, I encountered some challenges in identifying a precise solution. However, through the two rounds of usability studies, I gained valuable insights about the essential aspects of a beneficial app. I learned the importance of maintaining focus and avoiding the inclusion of excessive features scattered throughout the design.
Thank you for taking time to review my work!
